Charles is JTP’s Partner-in-Charge of Collaborative Placemaking working with communities and stakeholders on a range of urban and rural projects for the private, public and third sectors. In 2021 he was part of the JTP and Farrer Huxley team masterplanning Bailrigg Garden Village for Lancaster City Council (Winner Landscape Institute Awards 2022 Excellence in Masterplannng and Urban Design). This work led to the creation of the Lancaster University based Soils Task Force. Other recent projects include The Nicholson Quarter community planning for Areli Real Estate to create a transformational new Vision for Maidenhead town centre (Winner Planning Awards 2022 Stakeholder Engagement in Planning); the Vision for Harrington, 21st Century Sustainable Community for Summix in South Oxfordshire; the Liskeard Cattle Market Charrette for Cornwall Council, sponsored by MHCLG as part of their exemplar Charrette initiative; the Vision for Kendal whole town Charrette for Kendal Futures; the Vision for Tampere West+ city centre Charrette for Tampere City Council, Finland; and, the DLUHC National Model Design Code Pilot at Weyside Urban Village for Guildford Borough Council.
Charles’ recent book entitled “20/20 Visions: Collaborative Planning and Placemaking” (RIBA Publishing) was a finalist in the Urban Design Group Book of the Year Award 2019.
