Death to drawings – The radical design process behind Randselva Bridge

Randselva Bridge, located in Norway with its 634 metres, is the world’s longest bridge that has been designed and constructed using a drawing-free, model-based process. Sweco was in charge of the modelling and parametric design of the bridge. Innovation and collaboration with the contractor have been the cornerstones of success in this challenging bridge project which was awarded best BIM-model in the world 2020 by Trimble Global BIM Awards. The project challenges the status quo by relying solely on BIM-models as its only official documentation and source for information needed to build the bridge. The design contains 220 post tensioning cables, around 200 casting segments and more than 200’000 rebars, which is why the information model had to be organised with care. The model also served as the only official piece of documentation at the worksite. In the presentation learn how this radical new design process was applied and lessons learned along the way.

Øystein Ulvestad, BIM Developer, Sweco
