This 45 minute masterclass session will point out the huge opportunities low carbon retrofit presents the construction sector. Whether it’s the environmental and social benefits of re-use over demolition, or the financial benefits associated with rolling out a national retrofit programme that will train & employ 10,000’s people for the next 20-30 years, this session will also consider the political, legislative and economic changes that need to be put in place to enable a swift systems change from the current ‘take, make & throw-away’ society we have today, to the closed-loop circular systems that will allow us to meet our 2050 net zero carbon targets. Architect, academic and environmental activist Baker-Brown brings his unique insight to this subject, having spent the last 30 years focusing on delivering low carbon construction solutions, and in particular the last two years interviewing over 60 of Europe’s leading practitioners, clients, economists and thought-leaders working in this area, for the second edition of his book ‘The Re-Use Atlas; a designer’s guide towards a circular economy’, to be published by RIBA towards the end of 2023.
