Growing interest in zero carbon and low embodied energy casts a spotlight on materials that are specified. While mainstream petrochemical, synthetic and cementitious materials strive for lower embodied energy , the best way to achieve this is by using bio based, renewable, natural materials. Many architects and builders are nervous about using bio-based materials as they think they will nit be approved under building regulations, do not provide adequate insulation, are too expensive and there is no supply chain in place among many other misconceptions.
Tom Woolley will outline the contents of his book Natural Building Techniques showing the wide range of natural materials that are now available to use in construction, many of which provide better performance than conventional materials, are affordable and available.
Speakers:
Dr Tom Woolley, Rachel Bevan Architects
Chloe Donavan, Chief Executive, Natural Building Systems
Dr Jim Carfrae, Lecturer in Building Physics, Energy Use in Buildings and Low Impact Materials, Plymouth University
