The Big retrofit challenge

The Big Retrofit Challenge is a groundbreaking competition co-hosted by Futurebuild, Innovate UK, and the National Home Decarbonisation Group (NHDG).

This initiative is designed to unearth pioneering solutions for decarbonisation and healthy living spaces, offering innovators a platform to showcase products, processes, systems, and new approaches that support healthy homes in the UK’s built environment.

What you will win

Six shortlisted winners will have the chance to pitch their solutions live at the National Retrofit Conference at Futurebuild this March. Alongside the exposure, winners will benefit from exclusive networking with key industry stakeholders, including NHDG members, and may even have the opportunity to pilot their solutions in decarbonisation projects nationwide:

  • Present on the National Retrofit Stage: Showcase your solution at the National Retrofit Conference
  • Networking Morning: Exclusive access to NHDG members, with allocated time slots for one-on-one discussions
  • Potential Pilot Projects: Test your solution and gain real-world feedback in decarbonisation projects across the UK

eligibility and entry criteria

Your company must be a UK-registered business with a maximum annual turnover of up to £15m. Priority will be given to ‘less established’ organisations. Organisations must present a product, service, system improvement or other solution for the purpose of home decarbonisation and health improvement. This covers:

  • Solutions for retrofitting/renovation of existing homes
  • Solutions that apply to non-residential properties
  • Solutions applicable to new buildings will be considered, but they must also have an application for retrofit

Further criteria to consider:

  • The product service does not have to be compliant with PAS2035 and the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) to be shortlisted, as this may limit the organisations that can be included, however, this application does assess consideration of how these standards could be met in the future
  • Organisations will be asked about the social value element of their innovation during this application process
  • Organisations will be asked about the level of resident engagement they have had when developing their innovation during this application process

Entry Deadline: 11am UK time on 28th November 2024
