“The core purpose of planning should be to create places that enable people to live happy and healthy lives within the natural limits of the planet, leaving sufficient space for nature.” The increase in major disruptions have exposed the fragility of many of our critical systems and shown how unprepared we are for future shocks. How do we build-in long term resilience? We have talked about “a planning system mired in uncertainty” at the same time as almost all local authorities have declared climate and ecological emergencies.
The Government’s own Net Zero strategy- build back greener recognises “the importance of the planning system to common challenges like combating climate change and supporting sustainable growth,” but a recent report from the Blueprint Coalition, warned that “lack of government support jeopardises meeting national and local net zero and land restoration targets.” How can we ensure that national policies and strategies are actually delivered on the ground? Planning at both national and local level has the control and can drive long term delivery for a resilient, sustainable future for all. Lessons can be drawn from best practice that could be scaled up. How can we ensure this happens?
